MBBS to get a new syllabus after 21 years
Here is a big news for all the medical aspirants out there. MBBS, after 21 years will witness a new syllabus which will come into effect from session 2019 onwards. The new syllabus for MBBS has been drafted by the Medical Council of India and the newly drafted one claims to aim at inculcating empathy and globally pertinent knowledge in prospective medical professionals.
Till now, for MBBS studies, the curriculum framed in 1997 has been in use. The new curriculum has been reportedly finalized on Friday, 09th November 2018.
The MCI has framed the new MBBS curriculum after a lot of research and deliberation over a period of 2.5 years. The syllabus has been planned in accordance with global scientific advancements and an in- depth study of the emerging diseases.
As per a draft submitted to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the title of the new course curriculum is “Competency-based UG curriculum for the Indian Medical Graduate.” The oversight committee has finally approved the curriculum in principle.
It is said that the old curriculum focused on only one domain of medical education i.e the classroom based learning, but the new MBBS curriculum will observe a distinctive focus on Practical Training, Attitude, and Ethics.
Chairman of Board of Governors, Dr. VK Paul in a recent event cited to the National daily The Tribune, “The curriculum has a course called Attitude, Ethics, and Communication (AETCOM) which will run across years. Students will be assessed for how they communicate with patients, how they counsel people for organ donations or other challenging procedures; how sensitively do they often care and obtain consent. All these things will count along with competencies and skills”.
Focus Areas of the New MBBS curriculum in India:
- A two-month ‘Foundation Course’ will be introduced from the next session onwards rather than jumping straight away into fundamental subjects such as anatomy, physiology etc. The foundation course will aim at orienting a medical student to MBBS programme.
- With the introduction of new MBBS syllabus, students will start getting the practical education from the very first year.
- Students will be able to study subjects of their choice.
- Medical mannequins and models will be provided for clinical training
- Theory classes will be reduced to a minimum. Two-thirds of the course will include interactive and practical based classes.
- The learning process will be problem-oriented
The new MBBS course curriculum has been welcomed across the country. The lack of qualified medical professionals and the poor doctor patient ratio in India is expected to be fulfilled by the qualitative changes made in the curriculum.
The focus areas of the newly drafted curriculum can be the game changer in improving India’s healthcare system.
